Barbie Heads

Barbie Heads

I am reminded for some odd reason that I carried on a very long friendship with a very fun group of people, sure they were plastic and I had to pay for them...but that is okay.

I enjoyed Barbie's company until I was about 14. Now I get to play them with my daughter.

First memory with Barbie and Friends: I was 4 years old or younger. The sound of a train on the tracks came from outside the house. Ken had the 70's newscaster plastic hair and a U-shape crotch, (pre-underwear models) and Barbie's hair was still easy to brush. I was trying to squeeze Barbie into a homeade crochet shirt.

Second Memory with Barbie: 5 years old. Dimly lit bedroom at night. The sound of Jethro Tull's Aqualung blasting from the speakers in the living room. The smell of incense. My Barbies were strung out all over the floor. The song Aqualung sounded dirty. I think I should've been sleeping, but was secretly awake.

Third Vivid Barbie memory: 5 years old . Christmas at Grandma Martha's. Smell, Christmas Dinner and Eucalyptus. I just received a red Barbie Corvette and Barbie pool-set you could put water into. And Peaches N' Cream Barbie.

All the Barbie shoes that have been left behind and that have fallen into the heater vents of all the houses I have ever lived.

All the Barbie heads that popped off and that could never be put back on because the plastic neck had chipped.

All the Barbie's that had their hair chopped off and faces drawn or painted with nail polish.

My favorite dolls were: The 90210 Barbie set (except they left out David, Steve, and Andrea characters), Jem (she was the Amazon Queen of all Barbies) Rollerblade Barbie, The Disney Dolls, The Barbies with extremely long hair that actually came with scissors so you could cut to your heart's delight without getting in trouble. I loved all the Midge dolls. I love Redheads.

People cut Barbie down for not being a realistic role-model for girls, but that is unfair. Barbie is the only role-model I had who could become a doctor-gymnast-teacher-rockstar-veterinarian-flight attendant, hold a steady relationship, have such a large social circle, and take care of her three little sisters all at the same time! (where was Barbie, Skipper, Stacie, and Kelly's parents anyway?)

Barbie, You are the Bee's Knees!
